Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee Towing: What You Can Actually Pull
Maximum towing capacity is a properly-equipped figure that applies to one specific configuration. Your actual capacity depends on engine, axle ratio, cab and bed configuration, and the tow package fitted. The number on your door jamb and in your owner’s manual is the one that governs.
Towing questions are the most common questions we get about the Ram 1500 and the Grand Cherokee, and they are also where the most misinformation circulates. The headline figure in an advertisement is real, but it describes one build.
Why the advertised number is not your number

Manufacturers publish maximum towing capacity for the configuration that achieves the highest figure. That typically means a specific engine, a specific axle ratio, a specific cab and bed combination, and the factory tow package fitted.
Change any of those and the figure changes. A different axle ratio alone can move capacity by a meaningful margin. So can adding four-wheel drive, which adds weight.
The number that applies to your vehicle is on the tire and loading information label and in your owner’s manual.
The number people forget: payload
Towing capacity gets all the attention. Payload is what actually limits most people.
Payload is how much weight the vehicle can carry — passengers, cargo, and the tongue weight of the trailer pressing down on the hitch. Tongue weight typically runs 10 to 15 percent of the trailer’s total weight.
Do the arithmetic. A trailer near the upper end of your tow rating puts substantial tongue weight on the hitch. Add a full crew of passengers and gear in the bed, and payload becomes the binding constraint well before tow capacity does.
This is why a truck rated to tow a certain amount cannot always tow that amount with a family aboard.
Ram 1500
The Ram 1500 offers multiple powertrain choices, and capability varies meaningfully across them. Configuration matters as much as engine choice — cab style, bed length, drivetrain and axle ratio all factor in.
If your towing needs run consistently heavy, the Ram 2500 is built for that duty cycle rather than stretched to meet it. Regularly towing near the top of a half-ton’s rating is harder on the truck than towing comfortably within a three-quarter-ton’s.
Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L
The Grand Cherokee and the three-row Grand Cherokee L tow well for their class, with capability again depending on powertrain and equipment.
The Durango is worth comparing if towing is a priority and you want three rows — it is built on a platform with more towing in mind than most three-row crossovers.
The Gladiator sits in its own category, offering open-air capability with a bed and real tow ratings.

Towing safely, not just legally
Staying under the rating is the floor, not the goal. A few things matter as much:
- Weight distribution. Roughly 60 percent of trailer load ahead of the trailer axle. Too little tongue weight causes sway.
- A weight distributing hitch where the manufacturer recommends one.
- Trailer brakes at the weight threshold your manual specifies.
- Tire pressure at the towing specification, which is often higher than the everyday figure.
- Transmission temperature. Use tow/haul mode. It changes shift behavior specifically to reduce heat.
Towing is severe duty from a maintenance standpoint. Fluid and brake service intervals shorten. Our service department can set you up on the right schedule.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find my vehicle’s actual towing capacity? Your owner’s manual and the label on the driver’s door jamb. Those govern, not the advertised maximum.
What is the difference between towing capacity and payload? Towing capacity is what you can pull behind you. Payload is what the vehicle itself can carry, including trailer tongue weight.
Do I need a weight distributing hitch? Above a threshold specified in your manual, yes. It levels the load across both axles and improves stability considerably.
Does towing affect my maintenance schedule? Yes. Towing puts you on the severe-duty schedule, with shorter intervals for fluids and more frequent brake inspection.
Can I add a tow package after purchase? Some components can be added; the full factory package involves cooling and electrical elements best fitted at build. Our parts department can tell you what is possible for your specific vehicle.
